Karachi Port trust

This building with neo-classical rennaisance architecture stands out on the port side of Karachi. During the World War II, it was converted into a 500 bed hospital.

Manora Beach

Manora is a small Island near Kemari (Kiamari) Port. This Island has a military base & it also serves as residential establishment. But it is open for general public and tourists. There is a long sandy beach towards the southern end of the Island where you can find clear pollution free waters. This beach makes Manora a popular picnic spot. It only takes 20 minutes in a boat to reach Manora from Kemrai at a cost of Rs. 30/- per person. Water at Manora Beach is more clear as compared to Sea View or Clifton which are higly polluted beaches. Also it is comparatively near from City Centre as compared to Hawks bay or any other beach in the vicinity.

Safari Park Karachi

Safari ParkThe name sounds that it is safari park but don’t fool yourself, its just a park nothing more. There are few bird cages of bird or may be few deer. Most of the time this park is heavily crowded and over the weekend avoid going up there. Its located in a residential area called Gulistan-e-Jauhar.

Karachi Zoo

The Karachi Zoo was kind of sad when I went but I read on the Karachi Metroblog that it has underwent some renovations recently.. I don't really know any details about that but I hope it's true. I went in hopes of taking a photo on an elephant but the elephant wasn't there. There was, however, a tiger in a small cage, and a lion, and some flamingoes. It was deserted, but it's something to do during the day. Build sometimes in 1866, it was known previously as Gandhi's Garden. Situated in the heart of Karachi, the zoo has a small natural history museum, a reptile house, and a small mughal garden. IT AINT THE BRONX ZOO! Zoo boasts number of acquatic birds, mammals, reptiles, apes/humans, goats, porcupines, cats, dogs, etc etc...for everyone tastes!Small but satisfactory!ANARKALI (pictured), died in 2006 due to cardiac arrest associated with old age. She was the main attraction for as long as I can remmember. Recently the zoo got two new baby elephants to

Frere Hall Karachi

The days of the British Rule, Frere hall served as a Town Hall and was the hub of Karachi’s socio cultural activities. This handsome Venetian Gothic building was built to commemorate the Commissioner-ship of Sir Bartley Frere and his elevation to the Viceroy's Council in 1859. Construction of the building was commenced in August 1863 and was completed in 1865.The ground floor houses a fine public library named Liaquat National Library (after Mr. Liaquat Ali Khan, first Pakistani Prime Minister). It is one of the largest libraries of Karachi, contains over seventy thousand books, including rare and hand written manuscripts, newspapers, dictionaries, atlases and technical books. The upper floor serves as an art gallery containing masterpieces of Pakistan’s famous calligrapher and painter Sadequain.Park suurounding the main building is known as Bagh-e-Jinnah (Jinnah Park). It is very green and beautiful. People come and relax here in free time.

Teen Talwar Karachi

This impressive monument can be found in the area of Clifton.Karachi has many landmarks, but the Teen Talwar really stands-out. The three white marble swords symbolize (and are inscribed with the dogma of Pakistan's founder, Mohammad Ali Jinnah) Unity, Faith and Discipline. ("ittehad, yaqeen-e-muhkam, tanzeem.") This lovely tribute was commissioned by the former President & Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (Quaid-e-Awam). The abundance of white, good-quality marble in the city's vicinity has apparently encouraged its wide use for the creation of many monuments, lending a symbolic nature of grandeur & purity.NOTE: If you're hoping for a picture of yourself standing in front of this monument, it's not possible: the 3 swords are located in the middle of a very busy roundabout (also known as Teen Talwar Intersection near St Andrew's Church). So clicking a few pictures from a distance whilst you're waiting in traffic is the best optio

Hill Park Karachi

It would be one of my favourite place in Karachi. It is also situated in the middle of a residential area called PECHS, don’t ask me what does it stands for. It is on the top of the hill and you can have a nice view of the city from this park. Nothing much for the amusements but location makes it worth a visit.

AirBlue AirBus

Pakistan International Airlines

We decided to fly with PiA to Karachi as they had the most convenient flight timings for our hectic travel schedule. Even my Pakistani colleagues at work had warned me: "don't fly PiA! Even Pakistanis try to avoid it!" But, as hardened, brave (and slightly budget-concious) travellers we covered-up, dress decently, had one last strong drink at the airport and boarded the plane...PiA flies to the following cities in Pakistan:Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Faisalabad, Multan, Peshawar, Sukkur & Quetta. On March 11 of 1955, Orient Airways merged with the Government's proposed airline, becoming Pakistan International Airlines Corporation. To be on the safe side, we had packed all our clothes as carry-on luggage. As we were attending a traditional wedding & would be wearing Saris, I didn't want to take the risk of my bags taking a subcontinental detour and not reaching us in time for the event. Some friends that had previously travelled on PiA had also g

Jinnah International aArport

Jinnah Int'l Airport has always been the largest aviation facility - both international & domestic - in Pakistan. It is the primary hub of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).From the 1960s to 1980s Karachi was once a much busier airport. It was an online station of many major airlines of the world including British Airways, Lufthansa, Aeroflot, Swiss Air, KLM, Air France, etc. However, due to the emergence of Dubai's airport in the 1990s, acting as the "gateway between Europe and Asia", several airlines discontinued their service to the airport. The airport states that they handle almost 6 Mio passengers per year.ARRIVAL:Upon arrival we gladly went to the "Foreigners" counter. As we had been the only non-Pakistanis on our flight we were through in less than 10 min. Your passport & visa are checked and a small camera takes your picture. (As the whole affair looked rather serious, we tried not to laugh at the female officer's amusin

Sajjad Restaurant

The restaurant has a large outdoor area, and alfresco dining is in its heart. The restaurant is decorated in Pakistani village chic. Elevated sitting platforms (takhat) covered in ethnic cloth, surrounds the table. You can sit cross legged on the "takhat" or laze on a huge sausage like pillow, while enjoying the breeze. This restaurant serves Pakistani food. I would recommend ordering, karhai and barbecue. For the faint hearted order the "Afghani" selections. They tend to be mildly spiced. They also do steaks and Chinese food, albeit attenuated to the Pakistani palate--which isn't at all bad. Just don't be surprised if they don't taste like the one's you are used to! The place is packed on weekends and I recommend getting there early (around 8pm) if you want a good table. Great place for kids to run around. Separate sitting arrangements for Gents and Families. Chicken Tikka, Karhai, Tandoori Paratha for dessert: Kulfi Falooda!I just wish

Makran Coastal Highway

There are some amazing sphinx like natural rock formations off Makran Coastal Highway; a treat to watch along with a pleasurable long drive along the crystal clear coastal line. A rare sight, indeed, in Pakistan. This includes a naturally carved statute “Princess of Hope” as named by Angelina Julie and other mind-boggling formations. We were caught in a sheer surprise on our way to Ormara when watched these formations and kept on debating that whether they are natural or man-made.This is an easy day trip from Karachi and can be clubbed with Malir Khand beach and Mud Volcanoes.Click this for some out-of-the-world views. The newest trend in enjoying Karachi is a Mad Max style dash to Gawadar from Karachi (800 km+). You only stop to relieve yourself or eat. Takes you approx. 8 hours to reach Gawadar, spend one day in Gawadar, and than dash back to Karachi.A convey of cars comprising of family members, friends, and other acquaintances, take trips to Gawadar from Karachi. Patron Saint of Karachi

Situated in the upscale area of Clifton, overlooking the Arabian Sea. Legend has it that Abdullah Shah Ghazi Mazar protects the inhabitant of Karachi from calamities thrown towards this populace city from the sea. Abdullah Shah Ghazi was a Sufi saint who came to this area 1400 years ago. He preached Islam to the local population and was revered as a great patron to the community. Hundred thousand of people daily throng to his shrine today, which is situated high above a small hill overlooking the sea. Many people have claimed that their wishes have been granted at his shrine. He is also revered by the fishermen community as well. It is claimed he had great powers over the sea. Legend has it that once the sea was rough, the fisherman approached him to calm the sea down. He took sea water into his bowl, curled the bowl closed and requested the sea to be calmed. The sea calmed down, and the fishermen went about their business. Since then a lot of tropical storms and cyclones

Nathia Gali Beach

Nathiagali is a naval base, the last point on Karachi’s coastline. Access is RESTRCTED. One can only go if you have senior ranked connection in the armed forces, and accompanied by your host. Your host will have to make a booking in advance through his or her unit. If you do not have this host, you will not be allowed to enter the base. We visited this base along with our friend in the Navy. It is a very exclusive beach, untouched, and very clean. On one side is the Cape, the other the ocean. Slightly off the beaten path one can also visit the Cape Monze lighthouse. Along the way we saw some very ancient graves of Arabs generals who came to this place 1000 of years ago.The highlight of our trip was a BBQ organized late in the evening, and watching the green phosphorus light up the dark waves crashing on the shoreline.

Manora Lighthouse at Cape Monze

One of the oldest lighthouses near Karachi, the structure is much higher than the one at Manora. The height is approx. 167 feet. The status of this lighthouse has been downgraded to a beacon (thus the black & white markings), which emits an audio signal directing ships towards Karachi. The isolated lighthouse coast was flooded with seashells, and rocky enclave inhabited by crabs. Entry is restricted via Nathiagali. You will require Navy’s permission to first access the base, and then a 4x4 to drive towards the lighthouse. Along the way we saw some very ancient graves of Arabs generals who came to this place 1000 of years ago.

Jehangir Kothari Parade

Clifton was built by an eminent Karachi citizen Mr. Jahangir Kothari on his land, 85 years ago, which he bequeathed to the city of Karachi. The pier of the complex was named after Lady Lloyd, Governor Lloyd’s wife, and the marble plaque embedded in the pier wall reads :“Lady Lloyd Pier. Inspired by Her Excellency the Hon. Lady Lloyd, this promenade pier and pavilion was constructed at a cost of Rs.3 Lakhs and donated to the people of Karachi by Jahangir H Kothari, OBE to whose generosity and public spirit the gift is due ....... Opened by Her Excellency the Hon. Lady Lloyd 21st March 1921.”In June 2005 City Disctric Govt. has started the renovation work of Clifton by removing old Play Land and covering more area on both sides of Lady Lloyd Pier and finally it was inaugurated on February 27, 2007. The park is country's Biggest Park, constructed on 130 acres of land. Newly formed park is named as "Bagh-e-Ibne Qsim" in memory of gr

Hawks Bay Beach

Karachi has several beaches in its surrounding:Clifton: The closest and easy to access is the Clifton/Sea View, which stretches from Defence Phase 8 to Clifton's other corner. It is also one of the most crowded and unfortunately a polluted beach. However there are several good restaurants and fast food outlets for one to enjoy. The KPT Fountain is also visible from Clifton. Avoid going to the beaches on weekends or holidays. For other beaches, it is easily accessible via Mauripur road. These beaches are in the following order, first beach being: Sands Pit: As the name mentions, the beach is very sandy, and on some spots there are small pits in the water. Numerous huts lines the beach front, and is the first choice for weekend revelers. Hawks Bay: Further down the coastline (going west) is Hawks Bay. The beach is a mixture of sand and some rocks. The further west we go from Sands pit, more rocky the beach gets. Huts also lines it. French Beach: For members only, this b

Mohatta Palace Karachi

Fatima Jinnah's last residence which has recently been converted to a beautiful museum. Presently the exhibit, Crown in the Jewel, which depicts Karachi during colonial period.Built in the 1920s in the "Rajistan Moghul" style. The current restoration foresees the creation of a museum of Pakistani and regional decorative arts.Mohatta Palace was build by Shivratan Chandraratan Mohatta, a Hindu businessman in the 1920's, using pink Jodhpurs stones with local yellow stones. PAF Museum Karachi

You will see a lot of old obsolete fighter aircrafts, occassionally a train passing near the museum, and automobiles in the evening spraying insecticides to kill the "bloody" mosquitoes.Situated near the main thoroughfare, Shara-e-Faisal, therefore the base itself is called Shah Faisal Base. In addition to displaying airplanes in the open air, there is also a hanger which houses antique airplanes as well as armaments, engines, paintings, sheilds, etc. There is also a play area for kids, where they can enjoy various amusement rides.Highlight of the museum (insdie the hanger) is an old Vikor plane in which Pakistan's founding father, M.A. Jinnah, took his last journey to Karachi on Sept 11, 1948.Check thier website for more info: http://www.pafmuseum.com.pkOh yes!
